2Yugoslavia (1918–2003)

Yugoslavia was formed after World War I, combining several ethnic groups under one kingdom.

For much of the 20th century, it was a socialist federation made up of six republics: Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, and North Macedonia. Ethnic tensions, economic issues, and nationalist movements led to its breakup in the 1990s. Today, the former republics are independent nations.
