Underground Complex

Beneath the Colosseum lies a vast network of tunnels and chambers known as the Hypogeum. This intricate system was used to store props, transport animals, and prepare for spectacles.

Retractable Roof

The Colosseum once had a retractable awning called the velarium.

Made of canvas and ropes, it provided shade for the spectators during scorching summers and protection from the rain.

Naval Battles

The Colosseum could be flooded to recreate dramatic naval battles. With a complex system of channels and pumps, the arena could be transformed into a miniature sea.

Wild Animal Showcase

Apart from gladiatorial combat, the Colosseum also hosted elaborate shows featuring exotic animals brought from different parts of the Roman Empire, including elephants, lions, and giraffes.

Seating Arrangement

The seating arrangement was strictly hierarchical, with the emperor and the aristocracy occupying the lower levels, while commoners were seated higher up. Slaves and women were relegated to the uppermost section.

Marble Stripping

In the Middle Ages, the Colosseum was a valuable source of building materials. The outer layer of marble was stripped off, leaving behind the exposed concrete core we see today.

Christian Martyrdom

Contrary to popular belief, there is no concrete evidence to support the notion that early Christians were martyred in the Colosseum.ย  The belief likely stems from its association with persecution during the Roman Empire.

Restoration Efforts

The Colosseum has undergone various restoration projects throughout history. The most extensive one took place between 1993 and 2000, funded by Italian and international organizations.

Symbol of Rome

The Colosseum is considered a symbol of Rome and its grandeur. It has been featured in numerous movies, including “Gladiator” and “Roman Holiday,” further cementing its place in popular culture.

UNESCO World Heritage Site
