Lake Natron in Tanzania may look otherworldly with its red waters, but its beauty hides extreme danger. This alkaline lake is one of the harshest environments on Earth due to its high levels of sodium carbonate and its scorching surface temperatures, which can reach up to 60°C (140°F).
The lake’s waters are so acidic that they can burn the skin and eyes of animals that come into contact with it. Despite this, some species, like flamingos, thrive here, using it as a breeding ground.
