Lake Karachay in Russia is considered one of the most polluted places on Earth. During the Soviet era, it was used as a dumping site for nuclear waste. The radiation levels are so high that standing near the lake for an hour can be lethal.
Although the lake has been filled with concrete to reduce radiation exposure, it is still an environmental hazard and a stark reminder of the dangers of nuclear contamination.
