In the heart of the Karakum Desert lies a massive crater known as the “Door to Hell.”

Originally a natural gas field, the crater collapsed into a fiery pit in 1971 when Soviet scientists attempted to burn off excess gas. Over four decades later, the crater still burns bright, emitting flames and toxic gases into the night sky.
