Tourists in Rome fined with €450 for bathing in historic Fountain

Belarus tourist caught bathing in Piazza del Popolo fountain.A 41-year-old tourist from Belarus was fined by Rome police after she was caught bathing in the waters of the Fontana della Dea in the central Piazza del Popolo. In addition to the fine, the tourist was issued with an “urban daspo” order, banning her from returning to Piazza del Popolo for 48 hours.Dating to 1823, the Fontana della Dea was designed by Giuseppe Valadier and sculpted by Giovanni Ceccarini. Earlier this summer Rome mayor Virginia Raggi reminded tourists that the capital’s historic fountains were “not swimming pools”, with those caught in violation of the city’s new rules facing fines of up to €450.
