A magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck the Tyrrhenian Sea at 12:10 this morning. The shock was very deep, with a hypocenter measured by the INGV at a depth of 144.8km, but despite this, the shock was felt in Messina, Sicily, and Calabria.
Deep small earthquakes between 100 and 500 kilometers occur very often in this area (South Italy) and do not occur in other areas of Italy. In some cases, these earthquakes have magnitude also relevant.
