From Tuesday, snacking is banned on some of Florence’s most-trodden streets.
Anyone caught eating on streets that run through Florence’s historic centre – Via de’ Neri, Piazzale degli Uffizi, Piazza del Grano and Via della Ninna – fine of up to €500.
“Respect residents, traders and workers of this street,” instructs a new bilingual poster that local businesses have been asked to put on prominent display.
The restrictions apply during peak lunch and dinner times, from 12-3pm and 6-10pm, and will remain in place for at least four months. They’re aimed not only at reducing litter but keeping pavements clear of the crowds that form around eateries, making the narrow streets hard to navigate/
Rome has also experimented with banning picnics around fountains and other monuments during the summer months, when tourist numbers peak.
