Gondoliers wanted: Venice seeks to fill vacancies for city’s defining profession

If you can swim and finish school by 16, you could become a gondolier in Venice!
The city needs new gondoliers because many are retiring and more tourists are visiting. Gondoliers earn up to €150,000 a year by giving boat rides and sharing the city’s history.
To qualify, you must pass a skills test, complete a training program that costs €800 in total, and pass a medical exam. The job can be demanding but pays well, with gondoliers charging €90 for a 30-minute ride for up to five passengers.
