3Czechoslovakia (1918–1993)

Czechoslovakia emerged from the ashes of the Austro-Hungarian Empire after World War I. It was a union of Czech and Slovak territories.

Though the country managed to survive Nazi occupation during World War II and Soviet influence during the Cold War, internal disagreements between the Czech and Slovak populations led to a peaceful split in 1993, forming the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
